Dave Stevens - He will be missed

It's a shame when someone dies before his time. Dave Stevens was only 52 when he passed away on March 10 after a long struggle with leukemia. Dave's Rocketeer comics are part of what brought me back into comics in the 80s.

Over the years I have followed his art (somewhat sparse due to his perfectionism) and especially enjoyed his Bettie Page pinups. After discovering Ms. Page was still alive and living near him he became her friend and benefactor and helped her obtain financial compensation for the use of her likeness.

I was able to meet and talk with him briefly once at a convention and found him to be a genuinely nice guy.

Rest in Peace, Dave

The news about Dave Stevens was an unpleasant surprise for me too. I hadn't heard about his illness, but he was way too young to go.

I discovered the Rocketeer comics in the early 90s, a little late I guess... but it was a genuinely fun book, a rarity at that time. I didn't know about his personal relationship with Bettie Page though -- what a story! It's a real shame we lost him so early.
