Alexander Courage passes away...

In an info-scape dominated by political finger-pointing, seemingly endless Democratic primaries, and even more bad news about the environment, the economy, you name it -- you might be forgiven for not having heard the sad news that Alexader Courage, musical composer for the original Star Trek TV series, passed away on the 15th of this month.

Mr Courage had a long and distinguished career in the Hollywood music-making business, working with his longtime friend and fellow Star Trek composer Jerry Goldsmith on the orchestration of scores for countless movies including The Ghost and the Darkness, L.A. Confidential, Disney's Mulan, The Mummy and many, many more. But it is, of course, for Star Trek that I know him best; especially the instantly recognizable iconic intro music that ran alongside William Shatner's opening narration, carrying musical cues that were picked up time and again throughout the original Star Trek series -- as well as the Star Trek movie series, The Next Generation TV series, Star Trek video games, audio productions and more.

Just as it's impossible to imagine Star Wars without John Williams' thundering musical compositions, Doctor Who without Ron Grainer & Delia Derbyshire's otherworldly electronic opening, or the psychedelic 1960s Batman TV series without Nelson Riddle's loopy musical spasm of a theme song, Star Trek would have been reduced in a very real and fundamental way had Alexander Courage not been available to sign on to Gene Roddenberry's long-shot TV show as composer in 1965.

Though I never had the chance to meet him or thank him for his lasting contribution to the soundscape of my imagination, I will always be grateful for his work... as will uncounted millions of others around the world.

First Non-Read of the Week!

Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull #1

For all that I'd like to be able to review this comic for you, I can't -- because I haven't seen the movie yet (probably won't see it until tomorrow or Monday), and of course I can't read the comic until after I've seen the show. But, uh, this has Indy in it. And some other people... and something to do with archeology. How could any of that be bad?

Artist Luke Ross has a steady realistic style that ought to serve a period franchise like this one well, and writer John Jackson Miller has continued to deliver the goods over on his Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic title since its launch a couple of years ago, and I'm sure he'll be more than capable here.

George Lucas and Harrison Ford are both already talking about a fifth Indy movie -- but in any case, we won't have to wait another 19 years for our next Indiana Jones adventure. Dark Horse brings us Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods just next month. Makes your day, doesn't it?

X-Manga!

The Del Rey panel at the recent New York Comic-Con gave us a sneak peek at a couple of their upcoming X-Men projects, which will bring your favourite mutant heroes to the page in a pair of new and reinvented manga-style projects.

Wolverine: Prodigal Son will be a shonen-inspired adventure, with a story by Antony Johnston and art by Wilson Tortosa... while X-Men: Misfits will be a shojo-style book, written by Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman, with art by Anzu. Neither project has an official street date yet, but just to whet your appetites -- check out the first official character sketches for Misfits below!

First Reads of the Week!

GENEXT #1
In a long-delayed project, Chris Claremont gives us a look at what might have happened to the X-Men if they had been allowed to age in real time. It's been forty years since Professor Xavier founded the team, and the children -- or in some case, their children's children -- continue to soldier on. This project is built on the classic history of the title, without the doom & gloom that characterized Claremont's X-Men: The End trilogy... and I think that's what makes this book so much easier to read. Whether or not our new X-family will move beyond this miniseries, only time (and sales numbers) will tell -- but speaking as a reader who feels repeatedly pushed out of the X-books by the seemingly constant crossovers, I found GENEXT to be a surprisingly engaging read.

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #3
The world continues to suffer from the bizarre side-effects caused by the sudden return of the heroes of World War II, even as the Green Lama, the Fighting Yank and the Black Terror desperately try to fend off Dynamic Man's brutal assault on Shangri-La. Alex Ross continues to rework some of the classic superheroes of comics' golden age, giving each of the characters a satisfying twist that brings them into the 21st century. Solid stuff!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1
Using the ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST series as a launchpad, Starlord and his motley crew of adventurers -- Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamora, the new Quasar, and a reborn Adam Warlock -- form a new Guardians of the Galaxy, because, like the name of the story says -- somebody's got to do it! Writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning deliver a solid start for the team, and the visuals from artist Paul Pelletier have never looked better. Keep it up, guys!

Reaper Minatures' line of pre-painted plastic minis will shortly welcome some reinforcements. Cast from the same high-quality molds as their metal figures but offered in similar non-random assortments at a fraction of the price, Reaper's Legendary Encounters are just what the busy GM or wargamer needs to expand on his or her troops. The Next Best Thing to Saturday Morning Cartoons

When I was a little kid, I loved listening to these superhero-themed book & audio sets -- called Power Records, they were fun short stories starring Captain America, Batman, Spider-Man and others that were often very close to the DC and Marvel continuity of the age. Of course, my own copies of these gems have long been lost to time... but now, thanks to the magic of the internet, the Power Records library can rise again!

Follow this link to the Power Records Blog, where the kind host will treat you to a very creepy and fun re-telling of the origin of one of Batman's weirdest foes -- Man-Bat! And when you're finished there, check out the Power Records Blog archive (on the right side of the main page), where you'll find even more superhero flashbacks to the late 70s and early 80s. Have fun!

First Reads of the Week!

SUPERGIRL #29
Kara's mission to help one young boy dying of cancer hits its first major snag -- quickly followed by its second major snag and a whopper of a third. So far this book has maintained its distance from Final Crisis continuity tie-ins, and from what I hear it may escape contracting a case of crossover-itis entirely... which is a good thing, because I'm really interested in seeing where writer Kelly Puckett and artist Drew Johnson can take this character -- preferably without getting locked in to someone else's story.

JOE KUBERT'S TOR #1
Prepare yourself for a journey to a strange prehistoric age of monsters, mutants and epic dangers in the greatest pulp tradition -- Joe Kubert's Tor has returned! It's great to see an honest-to-goodness master of the comic book medium back in action, and it's clear from this issue that Kubert still has the touch. DC has pulled out all the stops with the production on this puppy, treating us to a nice cardstock cover and high-quality paper that shows up every bit of Kubert's expert linework. They even pushed all the ads in the book to the back of the issue, so as not to interrupt the flow of the story -- now that's class! Do yourself a favour and escape from super-hero mega-events for 22 pages -- the epic of Tor awaits!

HOUSE OF MYSTERY #1
The classic DC suspense/horror title returns under the Vertigo banner with a new look and a revamped concept courtesy of Fables bigwig Bill Willingham and his Jack of Fables co-writer Matthew Sturges. Cain and Abel, the long-feuding brothers who occupy, respectively, the House of Mystery and the House of Secrets, return with a new and unlikely problem. It appears as if someone has managed to steal Cain's house -- and where it has gone and what's happened to it is just the beginning of the story. The House is now both a refuge and a prison for five timelost individuals with strange stories of their own... oh, and a bar. The House of Mystery is now a bar, as well.

After a couple of years' worth of shaky titles from what was once the hallmark of outstanding comic books for adults, Vertigo looks to get back into my reading pile by selectively mining the creepy side of DC history, sticking what they find in a blender and booking phenomenal guest-artists like Jill Thompson and Bernie Wrightson to illustrate the result. The first issue is a great start, and has more than enough chills, weird magic and (as you might expect) mysteries to ensure I return for #2. Hopefully this is the start of something great!

More Previews from Chronoscope...

Reaper Miniatures has added a few new preview images for their upcoming cross-genre line of figures, Chronoscope... this time, we're treated to a British Colonial and a strangely familiar-looking pulp-era adventurer, who comes complete with a selection of three very different heads and sets of arms. Unfortunately for those of us waiting to add these figures to our collections, the wait is not over yet -- the official release date is still sometime in June.

Trying... to be... patient... aargh! No good. I'll just have to be impatient, I guess.
