Brave and the Bold Animated Series Coming

Turbines to power, engines to speed -- get ready to move out! For the first time in decades, the Bat-Universe seems about to embrace its campy, fun, wacky Silver Age past with the upcoming launch of the new animated TV series Brave and the Bold. Clearly following in the footsteps of great Batman creators like Dick Sprang and Carmine Infantino, the producers of this series promise to spin the Caped Crusader through a 180 degree turn and rocket away from the modern day grim-n-gritty status quo at top speed. Cool beans!

Captain America?

One of the rumours tearing up them crazy internets right now was apparently born of a question asked of Doctor Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman at the San Diego Comic-Con... specifically, regarding an as-yet-tenuous connection between the actor and the high-profile upcoming Marvel Comics movie adaptation of Captain America. Mr Barrowman was reported to have taken the question in his stride, expressing a longtime affection for Cap and even dropping a few hints that his people had been talking to Marvel's people, and, well... maybe?

Normally it's the screenwriter who makes or breaks a movie for me -- but if this bit of casting rumour turns out to be true, I for one will definitely pony up the dough to see this thing. So far, Barrowman has been hugely entertaining in every production that has had the good sense to cast him -- even when lumbered with the sometimes cringeworthy scripts the BBC has lobbed his way. I mean, I've even tuned in to the CBC's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? because he's a panelist, for God's sake. How nutty is that?

If you want a Captain America with range and heart, I can't think of anyone better. Matt Damon? Geez, you can't be serious -- he's Matt Damon! Matthew McConaughey? Yeah, boss, Ah'll get right after them Nazis after ah finish mah lemonade. Spare me. Mark Wahlberg? Well, maybe -- but then again, I haven't seen The Happening.

Come on, internets... be right for once!

First Reads of the Week!

AMBUSH BUG: YEAR NONE #1
Someone is killing off the women of the DC Universe (and stuffing some of them into refrigerators -- just ask Kyle Rayner)... and the newest murder victim is Jonni DC, one-time Continuity Cop. The only person who can solve her murder is... well, I'm guessing it's Ambush Bug, because that's his name on the cover.

Keith Giffen resurrects one of his loonier, unabashedly self-indulgent creations in a long-overdue new four-issue miniseries that promises to leave your head spinning, your sides aching, your eyes rolling and, quite possibly, your fourth wall in pieces. That last one depends largely on whether you know what the fourth wall is or not.

IMMORTAL IRON FIST #17
Danny Rand thinks things are going okay for him just now -- despite the fact that it's his birthday. Misty Knight finally seems to have decided it would be all right to be his girlfriend, the new Chief Operations Officer at Rand Industries seems to be settling in (despite all the baggage that comes along with Danny's secret after-hours activities), and he and Luke Cage are busting heads in the alleyways of New York just like the good old days. But what he doesn't know is that one of the oldest and most powerful enemies of those who carry the name of the Immortal Iron Fist is closing in on him... and what he doesn't know definitely can kill him.

New writer Dwayne Swierczynski does an admirable job of picking up where Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker left off, and artist Travel Foreman delivers dynamic visuals that remind me of Jae Lee's early stuff on Namor in the 1990s -- but in a good way. ;) All in all, a solid issue that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but maintains the pacing, the flashbacks to previous Iron Fists, and the well-rounded supporting cast of characters that kept me around for the first year and a half. I'll definitely be back for #18!

Indie Comics Review: I Kill Giants #1

From veteran comics writer Joe Kelly and newcomer artist JM Ken Nimura comes a very unusual new miniseries -- I Kill Giants.

Barbara doesn't fit in well with the rest of her fifth grade class. She does her best to suffer the rampant ignorance of her teachers, she tries to get along with her delusional principal, she attempts to tolerate the other students... but unfortunately things don't always work out very well. People in general don't seem able to deal with the simple truth of Barbara's existence: she hunts giants. She fights giants. She kills giants.

Not since Sam Kieth's amazing 1990s comic series The Maxx has a debut issue managed to engage, confuse and completely hook me all at the same time. This is destined to become an indie comics classic -- get in on the ground floor while issue #1 is still available!

ElfQuest Movie coming... at long last!

After many years of stops and starts, twists and turns, licenses beginning and ending and development options floundering and ultimately lapsing -- it looks as if the best-selling, much-loved classic independent fantasy comic ElfQuest may finally be headed for a the big screen.

Though I understand that when ElfQuest creators Wendy and Richard Pini signed on with DC Comics in 2003, they had some hope that DC would take advantage of their powerful parent company Warner Bros' uber-media super-might to help advance EQ in new directions -- say, with a few action figures, games and/or film & television development -- it seemed to take last year's termination of the Pini's contract with DC for Warner to sit up and take notice.

Though at the moment we have an individual who must qualify as one of my personal most-loathed screenwriters of all time attached to write and direct the EQ project -- that would be Rawson Thurber, author of the utterly putrescent crime against human intelligence known as Dodgeball, for those keeping score -- I still have hope that the Wolfriders' jump from page to screen will be worth the wait. Fingers crossed!

The New Face of Warlord

Phoenix Interactive have given us a look at the official banner for the upcoming release of the Warlord CCG 4th Edition... and while the info that comes along with it looks promising -- including details on the new Double Starter format as well as final numbers for size of the set and distribution of cards -- it looks unlikely that brick & mortar shops like Curious Comics will be given the opportunity of carrying the relaunch.

Though anything can still happen and distribution contracts can change at the drop of a hat, for the moment it seems as if Phoenix Interactive has decided the best way to market out the 4th Edition after the Gen-Con 08 rollout is through their online shop.

While I can't say this isn't disappointing, I can understand the logic behind the decision. It will, of course, make it that much harder to get new players into the game... I wonder what Phoenix has planned to get around that issue? We will see...

The Truth Is Out There...

Attention gamers! Be on the lookout for this strange unidentified miniature spotted lurking by the Reaper Minis products. Photographers were able to capture these images, but report that the creature quickly disappeared among the Chronoscope figures shortly afterward. Though apparently shy of humans, gamers are warned against approaching the creature -- it is reported to be larger than your average 28mm heroic scale miniature and likely possesses increased strength in proportion to its size.
