First Read of the Week!

DOCTOR WHO: THE FORGOTTEN #1

A-list artist Pia Guerra, fresh from her best-selling run on Y: The Last Man with Brian K Vaughn, joins writer Tony Lee for a turn in the TARDIS with this new miniseries from IDW.

The Doctor and Martha stumble into a strange high-tech museum packed with artifacts collected from the history of just one individual -- the Doctor. But the shadowy powers behind the museum aren't particularly pleased to see him, and casually wipe the Doctor's memory just to see how he responds. Martha is forced to help the Doctor regain his past before the damage triggers a regeneration -- and luckily they happen to be surrounded by just the kind of memorabilia that can jog his memory.

Though Lee's take on the characters is a fairly broad one that includes some borderline out-of-character moments, it's Ms Guerra's gorgeous art that kept me glued to the page and will guarantee I come back for issue #2.

First Reads of the Week!

CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI:13 #4
Paul Cornell wraps up his first story arc for the new title, pitting the Black Knight, Spitfire, Pete Wisdom and Captain Britain and the rest of MI:13 against the Skrull task force assigned to subjugate Earth's magic... and he does it with style, a good speech and a nice twist at the very end. It's difficult to get a real feel for this new series, launched as it was in the middle of Marvel's big crossover event... but still, Cornell managed to take the Secret Invasion tie-in baggage and turn it into something actually worth reading. Here's looking forward to the second arc!

GEN 13 #21: WORLD'S END

Caitlin, Roxy, Eddie, Sarah and Bobby are chasing a Ratcatcher through a teleportation device when the catastrophe from Number of the Beast #8 strikes -- forcing the teleport machine to put them into electronic data storage to save their lives. Six months later, the machine finally manages to deposit them in New York... but of course, this is no longer the world they remember. Writer Scott Beatty has had a number of fill-in projects tossed his way by DC over the last few years, but hopefully he has finally landed a long-term gig with Gen 13. He and Mike Huddleston do a great job of bringing the most upbeat Wildstorm book into the new post-apocalyptic status quo without gutting the characters -- nicely maintaining the tone of the book. Worth a look!

FREEDOM FORMULA #1
In a post-governmental age when the world is ruled by corporations, Zee is a Wastelander without much to look forward to in his life... but when his father's last wish sends him into Los Petropolis to deliver a package to the mysterious Rev, his father's unfinished business just might get him killed. The latest offering from freshman publisher Radical features all the high-quality art you've come to expect from their stable of creators, and a sharp script by writer Edmund Shern ensures that we have something to think about while looking at all the pretty pictures.

First Reads of the Week!

Eternals #3
Charles & Daniel Knauf flesh out Jack Kirby's Eternals mythos as reworked by Neil Gaiman in his best-selling miniseries of 2006. While the Knauf brothers have yet to blow me away on this book, it's phenomenal artist Daniel Acuna who keeps me coming back time and again -- this guy is one of the most unique artists working in comics today, and in my opinion is sadly under-appreciated. Pick up the book and see for yourself!

Authority #1: World's End
The world has ended... but the Authority is still here. Best-selling writing team Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning take the Authority down a completely new path, as Wildstorm explores its freshly ruined Earth. Artist Simon Coleby is terrific, reminding me a lot of early Tomm Coker stuff -- which is a pretty big compliment, I think. The whole World's End line has been an extremely brave move for the Wildstorm universe -- I look forward to seeing where this whole thing is going!

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Season 2 #1
All right, stop laughing. The much-loved series featuring teenaged versions of Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson and the rest of their friends returns, this time written by king of character-based comics, Terry Moore -- and here he uses his not inconsiderable talents to give us a peek at MJ's first day back at school. The art by Craig Rousseau grew on me with every page -- I will have to keep an eye out for his future projects.

Heavy Metal Is Good For You

Gaming industry mainstay Reaper Miniatures has announced a new line of affordable unpainted metal minis coming soon to your games table. Released under the banner of P-65, these minis will offer the same high level of detail and quality you've come to expect from the folks at Reaper, but at a substantially lower price. Too good to be true, you say? Well, maybe... but when you factor in the high percentage of lead the new line will contain -- perhaps as high as 60% -- the whole picture becomes clear.

Reaper has been looking into alternatives to the usual tin-based non-toxic metal alloy they use for their Dark Heaven, Chronoscope, CAV and Warlord miniature lines for several months now, ever since tin started going crazy on the stock market and they were forced to raise the prices on many of their products. While they will continue to produce lead-free minis under those familiar banners, the new P-65 line -- alongside initiatives like Legendary Encounters -- will offer the experienced gamer a more affordable alternative.

Just remember, kids -- gaming minis are not for chewing!

First Reads of the Week!

STAR WARS REBELLION #15
Jedi Master Celeste Morne makes her appearance in the Rebellion timeframe (between the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back) in the latest chapter in the Vector crossover. This is my first issue of Rebellion, and after reading this one I'm wondering why it hasn't been on my radar before now. Artist Dustin Weaver is terrific, capturing the style of the movies and the likenesses of the characters without (as far as I can tell) having to resort to lightboxing. Writer Rob Williams has a good grip on the characters and moves the overall Vector arc in a logical and natural way. The nicest surprise of the week!

PILOT SEASON: THE CORE #1
Innovative writer Jonathan Hickman brings us an interesting sci-fi pitch for a new ongoing series through Top Cow's Pilot Season series of one-shots. In an interesting universe vaguely reminiscent of Frank Herbert's Dune and aspects of Alexandro Jodorowsky's stuff, Hickman delivers a neat little teaser that tracks Earther Asimov Dediken's adventures on a Special Ops team in the Core, the heavily populated systems and worlds at the center of the galaxy and the established territory of the elder races -- not a place where you see many human beings. Packed with Hickman's usual out-of-the-box concepts and loaded with information, artist Kenneth Rocafort manages to smoothly bring the book under the Top Cow banner with some gorgeous visuals. Set aside some time to go through this one -- the creative team put a lot of work into making this thing something more than your typical 3-minute read.

WOLVERINE #67
Mark Millar and Steve McNiven continue to deliver wild twists and turns in the saga of Wolverine's apocalyptic future life in the second chapter of Old Man Logan. Moloids, Ghost Riders, Ultron 8, Peter Parker's youngest daughter and Thor's hammer Mjolnir all make appearances as blind archer Hawkeye drags Logan across the ruined United States. Though the parallels to Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns are glaringly obvious -- sort of like the similarities Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man had to Jeph Loeb's Batman: Hush, come to think of it -- this is still a fun read well worth adding to your pull list.
