Wall Street Crashes; Invest in Comic Books!

As the ongoing bloodbath on Wall Street continues to wipe ludicrous amounts of money out of existence and prompts many Amercian billionaires to consider pawning their 24K gold toilet seats and skipping the poodle's next pedicure appointment -- savvy business analysts are trying to think outside the box, attempting to avoid being crushed flat by this staggering, savagely wounded market's next lurch. While the Dow Jones, TSX, FTSE, Hang Seng and other global markets are pummeled by a nasty team-up of hope & despair, panic & profit-taking, rallies & crashes -- it's left up to this commentator to wonder... how long before the weary investor looks to other fields in search of sane and stable investments? And when he does... why not go with comic books?

Consider the potential! For instance, there are a finite number of Amazing Fantasy #15s out there -- there could be no conveiveable problems with faulty government fiscal policy helping to inflate price bubbles while simultaneously flooding the marketplace with new ones built on heavy subsidies, cheap labour and undeserved credit. Go with comic books and there would be nothing like the trouble you've been having trying to apply a real-world value to the interconnected contracts tied up with your opaque hedge fund investments -- just a quick look for yellowed pages, torn-out ads, folded corners and dings on the spine and you'd know where you stand. Forget about cheap commercial paper -- keep an eye out for DC Comics' array of late 80s/early 90s titles printed on crisp, heavy Baxter paper. The illustrations practically jump off the page... which has got to be better than jumping off the upper mezzanine of the NYSE and onto the unforgiving trading floor below, right?

So, um... with all that in mind... anybody want to buy fifty copies of Rob Liefeld's X-Force #1 off me?

Reaper Miniatures Hallowe'en Painting Contest!

It might seem to be a little early to start thinking about vampires and werewolves, witches and creepy-crawlies, but here's a little something to consider as October looms up on your calendar and Hallowe'en rears its three-eyed pointy-eared head in the near distance... cue the sinister music, please!

Curious Comics and Reaper Miniatures are challenging all you minis painters out there to dig up your favourite spooky Reaper Mini, paint it as best as you are able, and bring it to Curious Comics Hillside where we will host anonymous voting to select the most spine-chilling would-be boogieman of the bunch. The painter responsible for the macabre masterpiece will claim a bunch of awesome Reaper Minis!

Deadline for entries is Wednesday October 29; winner will be announced on Friday October 31. Stay tuned for more info!

Whither Bat Swarm?

If you're a gamer of wide interests who happens to use miniatures to enhance your gaming experience, it's just a matter of time before you'll find yourself in need of a swarm of bats. Whether you're a DM who wants to give unwary dungeon-raiders a surprise as they crack open the entrance to your latest subterranean keep, or you want a little something creepy to supplement your Vampire Counts or Necropolis army lists, a good bat-swarm will do the trick. But -- and here's where we get to the point, patient readers -- which bat-swarm from which miniatures company should you choose to add to your collection?

Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures featured a Bat Familiar in their Unhallowed set... but, nice as it is, you'd probably have to dig up a dozen or so of these guys to qualify as a swarm. Alternatively, Mega Miniatures offers up a multi-pack of bats as part of their Swarms line of figures -- perfect for expanding your growing guano farm without busting the bank.

Kind of cuddly-looking little fellers, though. Looking further afield, you'd think gaming industry colossus Games Workshop would have something cool along the Bat Swarm line in their catalog -- but a quick search of their inventory unearths just this unappealing little gang:

They look more likely to produce a laugh than a chill, if you ask me. Watch, now I'll get a letter from GW demanding I remove that image... not that I'll miss it much. ;) Which brings me to my old standby, kings of generic metal gaming figures of all stripes, Reaper Miniatures.

At first, a quick search of the Reaper Minis online database uncovers just this underwhelming sculpt; a weirdly two-dimensional and uncharacteristically ho-hum product from the creators who routinely bring us fantastic things like flying assassins, possessed homicidal fragments of zombie pirate ships and crazy dragonmen champions. But, dig a little deeper and we find this little gem socked away on their upcoming releases page:

Now that's what I call a Bat Swarm! Even if you haven't been combing the minis racks at Curious for a Bat Swarm to plug into your next d20 skirmish session, it would take a gamer cursed with an unreasonable amount of willpower to resist plotting just such an encounter as an excuse to pick up Reaper's creepy bit of bat-madness. This rabid little critter-fest is slated for an October release -- just in time for Hallowe'en! Wow, it's like the folks at Reaper had been planning this all along, isn't it?

First Read of the Week!

NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS
They say there's something strange in the deeper parts of the ocean... something shaped like a human being but powerful enough to withstand torpedo fire... something that seems to have no need of surfacing for air and can drag a submarine off course... something that may have been covering up the existence of the fabled underwater kingdom of Atlantis for, maybe, hundreds of years. But when a famous underwater explorer goes missing while on a dive -- with his last transmission seeming to declare he had actually found Atlantis -- the authorities bring in a famous debunker of modern myths, an adventurer grounded in the realities of modern science, to lead the investigation. And what he finds waiting for them deep under the surface of the ocean, hidden in the uncharted black depths of the Marianas Trench, could challenge even his closely held beliefs, forcing him to ask... is there really no such thing as Namor the Sub-Mariner?

Comic veteran Peter Milligan teams with illustrator Esad Ribic for a five-issue series that takes one of the first and most famous super-hero characters and places him in a world that more closely resembles our own than anything you usually find in the pages of a Marvel book. Atmospheric and smart, this first issue cooks up a clever new mythos around Namor, scattering hints and clues throughout its pages and slowly building enough tension to guarantee I come back for the next issue. The must-read Marvel book of the week -- great stuff!
