The Spoils TCG Comes Back From the Dead!

Against all odds, it looks as if The Spoils TCG is coming back from the grave. Declared dead after its parent company, Tenacious Games, found itself unsuccessful in securing a second round of financing in 2008 (something that we will probably be hearing a lot more of in this steadily deteriorating economic climate) and went belly-up last year. It was certainly a shame; The Spoils was the only non-licensed collectible card game to make a dent in the industry in ages, and there were plenty of local players who enjoyed its fun gameplay, wide-open deck-building opportunities and bizarre sense of humour. The carrot at the end of The Spoils tournament set-up was no slouch, either -- big money prizes to be won at invitational events on The Spoils Cruise Ship, a multi-day event sailing from New Orleans.

But now it seems as if The Spoils is staging a comeback. The Danish-based company calling itself Arcane Tinmen have apparently acquired the rights to the game, somehow sidestepping the debt associated with the trademark. In a post on The Spoils website, they even claim to have reinstated the Tournament Experience system of organized play, up to and including the famous cruise.

So, all you old Spoils players -- dig those decks out of your basement and shuffle them up. This game isn't nearly as dead as we thought!

First Read of the Week!

OISHINBO: JAPANESE CUISINE

When the Tozai News decides to create the Ultimate Japanese Menu as part of their 100th Anniversary celebrations, they tap young writer and culinary savant Yamaoka Shiro -- the son of the country's most famous gourmet chef and restaurateur -- to head up the effort. But the editors of the Tozai News make this decision before they realize that Shiro is actually in the middle of a long-running and extremely bitter feud with his father... a feud with deeply felt issues of family, tradition and food at its heart. With his father publicly sneering at his attempts and his own inability to resist challenging his father on every issue, what will happen to Shiro's efforts to assemble Ultimate Japanese Menu?

A 100-million-copy best-seller in Japan with over 100 volumes of manga in the series, Oishinbo is one of those famous Japanese classics that seemed destined to never make it over to English-speaking audiences... until now, that is! The award-winning creative team of writer Tetsu Kariya and artist Akira Hanasaki bring you the history, the theory, and the methods behind the preparation of Japanese food -- all set against the backdrop of the always-evolving grudge between the two main talented, arrogant, and very funny antagonists. A perfect antidote to the superhero surplus clogging the North American comics industry, Oishinbo is simply too good to pass up!

Sad Week for Sci-Fi Fans

This has been a sad week for sci-fi and television fans around the world, as we say goodbye to two of our most talented and celebrated stars.

I was very sorry to learn that actor/writer/director Patrick McGoohan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80. With a great career that spanned six decades and took him from TV classics to roles in big budget Hollywood movies, Patrick McGoohan was still undoubtedly best known for his groundbreaking 1960s ITV series The Prisoner.

Technically innovative, bold in its choice of subject matter and cannily prescient all at once, The Prisoner challenged viewers with its impressively intelligent scripts and liberal use of satire and symbolism, giving us a wonderfully unique series that has weathered the test of time like few others. The show was McGoohan's own from the very beginning -- apart from co-creating and starring in the series, he also ghost-wrote and ghost-directed many of the episodes. The famously difficult Hugo-nominated final episode, Fall Out, is still the focus of heated debate forty years later, inspiring enthusiastic discussion, theorizing and argument on internet home pages devoted to the show even today.

In the course of his career, Patrick McGoohan gave audiences something unique and enduring -- and for that I hope we'll always remember him.

Sadly, Wednesday saw the passing of Ricardo Montalban at the age of 88. Montalban certainly needs no introduction to science fiction fans; his famously deranged Khan Noonien Singh struck the Star Trek movie series like a vengeance-crazed lightning bolt in 1982's Wrath of Khan, traumatizing us for good. Still considered to be the high point of the film series, his Ahab to William Shatner's Moby Dick -- played out in maddened Shakespearean excess -- reminded many why they loved Star Trek in the first place, and paved the way for the enormously successful franchise that followed.

Of course, his career reached further than just outer-space maniacs in Star Trek, and to a wider audience he will always be better known as the mysterious Mr Roarke -- proprietor of the strange Fantasy Island, where any dream could come true... for a price. Montalban was so unforgettable in this 1970s/80s smash TV hit that he has never quite dropped off the pop-culture map ever since; Mr Roarke and his sidekick Tattoo still show up when you least expect them -- whether you're watching Looney Tunes, South Park or Futurama, they're never that far away.

Ricardo Montalban left an indelible mark on American TV and film -- and you can't honestly say that about many actors, can you? He will certainly be missed.

The Guardian newspaper has a retrospective of Patrick McGoohan's career which you can read here... and a look at Ricardo Montalban's work here. Both are well worth a click.

First Read of the Week !

Sub-Mariner: The Depths #4

If you think you know everything there is to know about the Sub-Mariner -- think again! In the world of The Depths, the legendary Namor might be many things -- a modern myth, a nightmare boogeyman visited upon sailors, a force of nature concealing one of the greatest secrets of all time. But to adventurer Randoph Stein, tasked with uncovering what happened to the last expedition that attempted to chart the bottom of the Marianas Trench, Namor is the irresistable force that is slowly tearing apart his crew and eroding his sanity.

Veteran comics writer Peter Milligan and artist Esad Ribic continue to deliver the goods in their imaginative reworking of the original Marvel Comics anti-hero. This is not your average super-hero comic -- and definitely worth a look!

First Read of the Week!

INCOGNITO #1

This week Ed Brubaker brings us Incognito, a brand-new twisted super-powered pulp-crime collaboration with artist Sean Phillips. Zack and his twin brother Xander were at the top of the supervillain game, working for the Black Death and racking up high-stakes heists and murder sprees all over the place -- until everything went wrong, his brother wound up dead and Zack found himself in Federal custody. Facing a death sentence, Zack did what any crook would do to weasel out of the collar -- turn state's evidence against his boss and sign up for the witness protection program. Everything after that was a blur of power-suppressing drugs, a grindingly dull 9-to-5 day job and a bottomless supply of self-loathing and feelings of inadequacy... until his powers started to come back, that is.

Whenever a comics writer tries to move away from the big corporate trademark characters into their own original stories, I always try to give the title a shot... and while Sleeper and Criminal may not have knocked me out, Incognito looks like it could keep me hooked for the duration. I mean, a cool premise, lots of crazy characters, great art, solid dialogue and a genuine dyed-in-the-wool jerk in the starring role -- what's not to like?
