I'd Buy That For A Dollar

Yahoo News is reporting that Comic Connect, an online comic book auction house, will shortly have that diamond among funnybook collectibles, Action Comics #1, up for bid.

According to the article, the comic featuring the watershed first appearance of Shuster & Siegel's costumed crimefighter - that would be Superman for those of you who came in late - was purchased in the 1950s for $0.35. Currently CGC'd at 6.0, it is the opinion of the folks at Comic Connect that this specimen ought to go back to the comic-grading company for an upgrade.

Though the bidding opens at $1 tomorrow night at 12 PM EST, you can expect this puppy to rack up six figures before the gavel falls in two weeks' time. Not bad for an initial investment of $0.35!

Obama X Spider-Man, Part V

More exciting than Meet the Press! Harder to catch than a crooked Republican! Hold on to your hats, True Believers - the historic crossover between everyone's favourite webhead (that's Spider-Man to you noobs) and everyone's favourite freshly minted President (I guess that would be the other guy on this cover) smashes through its fifth printing this week!

Did they discuss the economic stimulus package? Or the recent increase in troops in Afghanistan? Jump in and discover all the crazy political action for yourself!

If you missed out on versions 1-4, don't pass up your chance to check out this tongue-in-cheek meeting of great minds. Well, one great mind and one wisecracking wallcrawler, anyway.

The Force Is Strong With This One

Just try this with your Star Wars FX lightsaber and see how far it gets you! You'd be picking up pieces of shattered glass for the next week.

On the other hand, you could do what devoted dad and Star Wars fan Dave Rees did... build your own smack-proof lightsaber from scratch! Follow this link, young jedi, and take your first step into a larger world...

First Read of the Week!

I'm going assume that you've probably already read part one of Neil Gaiman's two-issue Batman story -- that's Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? for anyone who's been living in a cave for the past couple of months -- and talk about one of this week's underpromoted gems instead...

R.E.B.E.L.S. #1

Vril Dox, the amoral Coluan genius otherwise known as Brainiac 2, is back -- and this time he's on the run from his own private interplanetary security force, L.E.G.I.O.N. Throw in the Omega Men, Supergirl and a hidden message from the 31st century and you have R.E.B.E.L.S. #1, the first issue in a new ongoing sci-fi action series. The fast-paced, intelligent script by DC Comics mainstay Tony Bedard -- delivered to the page neatly packaged in expressive, kinetic art courtesy of 2000 AD veteran Andy Clarke -- not only brought me up to speed but left me feeling like I'd already read a couple of issues... and when was the last time you could say that about a new comic book? Highly recommended!

Front Page News!

DC Comics' recent announcement that the newest member of the Bat-family of costumed crimefighters, Batwoman, will be taking over their flagship Detective Comics title later this year has managed to squeeze itself onto the front page of the UK's Guardian website. Topics of discussion include redheads, lipstick lesbians and stiletto boots... and how could that be bad?

Head on over and see for yourself... and then be sure to stop by writer Greg Rucka's blog for a look at his script and a few stunning pages from artist JH Williams III's first 'Tec issue featuring the newsworthy detective. You won't be sorry you did!

NYCC Top Picks!

Keeping up with the news coming out of the New York Comic Con? Even as we speak (type?), every comics company worth its salt is lining up to tell fans about plans for new series and new creative teams at the first big con of the year... and some of them have even been good! Here are my picks for the best news items from NYCC'09 so far:

Greg Rucka & JH Williams III on DETECTIVE COMICS
The long-rumoured Batwoman project from Rucka and Williams seems destined to find its home at Detective Comics, taking over for Batman while he's "away"... whatever that means. (Aw, don't get me started on RIP/Final Crisis, I'll never get to the end of this post!) Williams is an extraordinary artist, and after Rucka's outstanding work on Captain America and Dardevil, I'm really looking forward to what they can bring to the Bat-books... they can certainly use all the help they can get!

Keith Giffen on DOOM PATROL at DC
Once again the disaster-plagued team comes back from the dead, this time under the direction of writer Keith Giffen. His stated goals include finding a way to make the entire history of the Patrol (that's from 1963 on, for those who didn't know) accessible to new audiences, in a monthly format that would seem to promise that rarest of modern comic book animals -- namely, stand-alone single-issue stories. Sign me up!

...with Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis Kevin Maguire on METAL MEN at DC
How can this be a bad thing? A dysfunctional family of well-defined and disparate characters, the Metal Men ought to be a great outlet for the "Bwa Ha Ha" that is the copyright and trademark of this accomplished trio. Too bad it will be limited to 10-page backups in Giffen's Doom Patrol... but since I'll be buying that anyway, who cares?

Tony Lee on new DOCTOR WHO monthly from IDW
Fresh from his Dr Who: The Forgotten miniseries, Tony Lee has nabbed the writer's duties on the upcoming ongoing Dr Who monthly. Lee has promised to take the Doctor and the TARDIS into new territories, with stories featuring new companions, new far-reaching arcs and more. Just the thing to keep fans busy while they're all waiting for production on the TV series to start up again.

Keep an eye on comic news websites like Newsarama and Comic Book Resources to catch the latest news as it hits the convention floor!
