William Shatner Scolds Hewlett-Packard

OK, so maybe this doesn't have that much to do with comics... but it's still pretty cool. When Hewlett-Packard recently reneged on their promise to build computers free of toxic PVC plastic and brominated flame retardant by 2009, everyone's favourite pop culture icon and best-in-show celebrity William Shatner teamed up with the clever folks at Greenpeace to leave a prerecorded message for every HP employee working at their global HQ in Palo Alto, California.

If you've ever seen an episode of the original Star Trek, then you know that you definitely do not want Captain Kirk talking to your computers... they have an alarming tendency to spontaneously self-destruct. You can listen to the message yourself by following this link to the Greenpeace website... I guess we can add this to the many ways in which William Shatner has already changed the world!

The Martians Have Landed!

All right, that's it. They've put circles in our cornfields, performed experiments on unsuspecting citizens and buzzed our 747s once too often -- it's payback time! From the people who brought you the best-selling zombie board game of all time (that would be Zombies!!! and its multitude of expansions, of course) comes the newest boardgame in the cathartic apocalypse genre... Martians!!!

No need to head off to Roswell or anything -- these nasty little critters are now easy to find on the new release shelf at your friendly neighbourhood Curious Comics. Aw, you're welcome.

First Read of the Week!

Amazing Spider-Man #600

Doctor Otto Octavius has been through an awful lot in his career as the multi-limbed miscreant Doctor Octopus... but the latest twist threatens to put an end to his strange story once and for all. Terminally ill -- apparently poisoned by the very radioactivity that grafted four prehensile robotic arms to his body all those years ago -- Doc Ock is determined to spend the time remaining to him by achieving something great... something that would benefit the whole of humanity and cement his place in history as a misunderstood genius. But when he uses new technology to connect his mind to every machine in Manhattan, will his subconscious loathing for Spider-Man be his undoing?

Mainstay Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott teams with penciller extraordinaire John Romita Jr for an oversized, largely self-contained Spider-Man story with laughs, twists, guest stars and a solid B-plot that all combines to manufacture that rare gem in modern comics -- namely, a great jumping point for new readers! Frankly, I haven't enjoyed much of anything coming out of the nearly-weekly Amazing Spider-Man book since the Brand New Day reboot... but #600 definitely played against my expectations (especially with the last page). Will #601 be as good? We will see...

Welcome to the Asylum!

Need a kobold for tonight's D&D game, but you don't have time to paint one of Reaper Miniatures' metal sculpts, and you don't feel like taking your chances with Wizards' randomly packaged prepainted minis? Well then, I guess you're stuck pretending the pennies on your battlemap are the bad guys again... unless that giant logo looming up over the horizon might have something to do with the solution to your dilemma.

Reaper has just announced the creation of Asylum Miniatures, a whole new line of affordably priced, prepainted plastic miniatures. Packaged with the mini (or minis) completely visible, you can say goodbye to crossing your fingers and trusting your luck while making your purchase and stocking your dungeon. With Reaper's vast catalogue of dynamic and unique sculpts to draw from, Asylum will absorb the previously released Legendary Encounters line and deliver a prepainted ready-to-play mini for any RPG or minis combat game -- in addition to developing new minis combat rules and, if the press release is any indication, any number of other as-yet-mysterious things.

I guess that still doesn't help you out with tonight's D&D session... the first releases from Asylum are a few moons away. But still, at least you can play safe in the knowledge that those pennies will soon be back in the swear jar where they belong!

For the rest of the simmer -- I mean, uh, summer -- our Johnson Street location will be staying open until 8:00 PM every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night. First Read of the Week!

Captain America #601

Something horrible is stalking the battlefields of World War Two... something that preys on American soldiers, drains them of blood, and resurrects their lifeless corpses -- turning them into blood-hungry predators. Faced with the threat of vampires on the front lines, the US Army command calls in the only soldiers they know who can face it head-on: namely, Captain America and Bucky!

This month, regular Cap writer Ed Brubaker brings us a self-contained, double-sized story with evocative art by comics industry giant Gene Colan -- legendary illustrator of Marvel classics like Tomb of Dracula, Daredevil, and Steve Gerber's original Howard the Duck. Digitally coloured directly over Colan's expressive pencils, this issue is a unique treat for anyone who ever got a kick out of 1970s Marvel horror comics. Highly recommended!

Dead Card Game Night: Visual Aids!

In honour of our newest addition to the gaming schedule at Curious Comics Hillside -- namely, Dead Card Game Night -- we bring you a few shots from one of our Events of Years Gone By. Here, players can be seen deep in the throes of strategic combat in a Warlord: Saga of the Storm tournament.

Warlord was one of our CCG game mainstays for many years... and now, sadly (despite finding an afterlife in a non-collectible format), it has gone on to join other great collectible-card-games-that-were in the big happy game room in the sky.

Which means, of course, that you can find people playing Warlord at Curious Comics Hillside every Friday night this summer, during Dead Card Game Night! If you've never played this great CCG -- or if you used to play and have the inclination to dig out your old decks, blow the dust off 'em and kick some butt -- then you know where to find us. Just follow the sounds of heavy weaponry smacking into plate mail...

Crazy what you find on your hard drive when you take the time to look, isn't it?

First Read of the Week!

North 40 #1

Due to an error in the library catalog of Vidette University, a restricted book is mistakenly mailed out to a small town library... and when unwary readers make the mistake of actually opening the thing, thirty-one different flavours of insanity are set loose on the populace -- spawning vampires, sorcerers, earth elementals, zombies and other things that are not quite so friendly.

With a sharp script by Aaron Williams and impressively stylish art by Fiona Staples, North 40 delivers a story that I would have expected to find under the Vertigo label rather than Wildstorm. Williams tackles the Lovecraft-shaded horror with a welcome sense of humour, populating his besieged little town with a cast of immediately likable characters; visually, Staples keeps the splatter at a slick and acceptable level.

If you find that your usual superhero comics have lost some of their appeal lately, then North 40 might be the change of pace you're looking for!

Everything is Better in Japan

It's true. I've checked. Don't believe me? Then take a moment to compare America's painfully inferior version of one of our favourite heroes -- in this case, Spider-Man -- to the massive improvements the production company Toei made to the concept when it was transplanted to Japan in the 1970s.

Peter Parker, Spider-Man of New York - a perpetually broke freelance photographer who has been exposed to irradiated toxins and cursed with freakishly weird powers, Peter is shunned by the public and smeared by the press, all while fighting a seemingly never-ending parade of losers, creeps and two-bit dingbats like Stilt-Man and Rocket Racer. Poor shlub.

Takuya Yamashiro, Supaidaman of Tokyo - a Motocross Champion granted amazing powers and equipment by a UFO, Takuya can do all the things Peter can -- but can also alter his size at will, is kept healthy by a powerful healing factor, commands a Battle Vehicle known as the Spider Machine GP-7, and -- as if all that weren't enough! -- Supaidaman is the pilot of the transforming giant robot/starship called Leopardon. Takuya uses all of these amazing resources in his battle to keep the entire planet safe from the intergalactic menace of Doctor Monster and the Steel Cross Squad, a powerful alien militia determined to conquer Earth! Holy Toledo!

Well, I think that's pretty clear -- but if there's any doubt in your mind, check out the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man TV show for yourself. Marvel Comics is thoughtfully offering episodes of the classic Tokusatsu Supaidaman for viewing on their website, with a new show added to the library every week. Watch a few episodes and I'm pretty confident you will soon be seeing things my way.

He debuted Thursday night to a standing ovation! Sure you have to stand for the anthem but still...someone must have liked it, they invited him back!

First Read of the Week!

Captain America Reborn #1

Ex-SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter -- together with former Avengers Hank Pym, Black Widow, the Falcon, and the Vision -- join James Buchanan (onetime sidekick Bucky and now the new Captain America) in an effort to solve the mystery of exactly what the Red Skull has been plotting the past few years... and most importantly, discover why the Skull seems to be using stolen technology in an attempt to resurrect his longtime enemy, Steve Rogers -- the assassinated Captain America.

Well, we all knew it was coming. In the wake of his high-profile death, Marvel Comics never made a secret of their plans to bring the 'classic Cap' back to comics before long -- but the question is, is it any good? Thankfully, with A-list creators Ed Brubaker, Bryan Hitch and Butch Guice delivering the goods -- and despite a somewhat overcomplicated delivery that will make easier reading for fans who have been following the regular Captain America monthly since the Civil War -- I think Marvel can safely include this book in the 'win' column. A solid start to the miniseries, and a must-read for superhero fans!
