But it's not all tooth decay - you can rot your mind too! This Hallowe'en, swing by your friendly neighbourhood Curious Comics for a fistful of free Hallowe'en comics. Choose from a Casper the Friendly Ghost/Little Lulu double feature, Popeye, Archie, and Star Wars.

Have a safe and fun Hallowe'en from Curious Comics!

Thor, Thou Hast Thy Father Much Offended

Wow, this upcoming Thor movie from Marvel is just looking better and better! This morning's big news - Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is set to step into Odin Allfather's iron-girded boots for the big show. Hopkins joins Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston (as Loki... presumably the male version), Chris Hemsworth (the Big T himself) and director Kenneth Branagh - that's what you call an all-star cast and crew, right there. A world away from Thor's last live-action appearance... which is probably best left forgotten, actually.

What did you do, Ray?!

Ah, the good old days, roasting marshmallows around the fire at Camp Anaconda. Mr Staypuft wouldn't do anything to hurt us... would he?

Now you can bring the gelatinous menace of the Staypuft Marshmallow Man -- as conceived of by somewhat dopey Ghostbuster Ray Venkman and brought to murderous sticky-sweet life by the genocidal demon Gozer -- to the comfort of your own home! And you don't even need to strap an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on your back. Just head down to your friendly neighbourhood Curious Comics and grab the first in the new series of Ghostbusters piggy banks off the shelf -- what could be easier?

Hallowe'en Countdown: Top Spooky Books #1!

Hallowe'en is right around the corner -- and to help you get in the mood, over the next few days Curious Comics will be counting down the Top 5 Spooky Books to help you make this October as creepy as possible!

Top Hallowe'en Books #1: Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D

The year is 12,090 AD, and the remnants of humanity are still crawling out of the ashes of war and destruction. But in this new world, it is no longer mankind that rules -- vampires, hidden in the shadows of civilization for long centuries, now dominate the ruined Earth, consuming or recruiting their human prey as they see fit. Cast back into a virtual Dark Age, powerless human villagers cower in fear, hoping and praying for a savior to rid them of their undying nightmare...

Enter the mysterious individual known only as D. Completely unlike anyone else stalking the radioactive wastelands, D is a proficient and deadly warrior, seemingly ageless, cursed with a parasitic demon locked onto the palm of his right hand... but he is also something more. Something hideously powerful, something that terrifies his vampiric prey. Is it possible that D is somehow connected to the most powerful vampire in history...? And if he is, why has he turned his back on his own kind, refusing to rule this horrible new world as the King of the Vampires?

The essential elements of the classic vampire story are given a Japanese twist in Hideyuki Kikuchi's long-running series of Vampire Hunter D novels -- each featuring evocative illustrations by master artist Yoshitaka Amano. Inspiring both a pair of anime films and a new series of manga books by Saiko Takaki, fans looking for an unusual new twist on the vampire mythos need look no further -- this is your new favourite horror franchise!

That brings us to the end of our Best Books for Hallowe'en Countdown -- hopefully there was something in our top 5 that will help your October 31 be extra creepy this year. Happy trick-or-treating!

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Spooky Edition!

Death Note: Episode 01

Meet Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high school student whose life is changed when he finds the Death Note -- a uniquely powerful notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami, or god of death, named Ryuk. When Light discovers that any human whose name is written in the book dies, he vows to use its power to rid the world of evil... but every action has its consequences, and Light soon finds himself in a life or death battle of wits with the mysterious genius detective called L.

If you haven't yet checked out the fan-favourite supernatural anime series Death Note, then here's the perfect chance -- those brain-boxes at Anime News Network have thoughtfully put up several episodes of the TV series, uncut and subtitled, on their free (and legal!) streaming video service. Of course, when you get tired of watching the series on your computer, Curious Comics carries a full range of Death Note DVDs and manga books just waiting to be added to your library. Cool, no?

Top Hallowe'en Books #3: Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein

A genius scientist seeking to rewrite the laws that govern life itself. The tortured and conflicted creature brought into this world by his creator's efforts. The terrible destiny they both share...

It's been almost two centuries since it was first published, and nearly everyone on Earth is familiar with Mary Shelley's groundbreaking science-fiction/horror tale Frankenstein -- as well as the many interpretations and reinventions the story has enjoyed over the years. Among the most vivid of these is horror master Bernie Wrightson's illustrated version of Frankenstein; a favourite of fans and critics since its original publication in 1983, it has been long unavailable to new readers... until now, that is!

Thanks to Dark Horse, this unique vision of one of the cornerstones of speculative literature is available once again, in an outstanding high-quality hardcover edition. The perfect treat for the discerning reader this Hallowe'en season!

Top Hallowe'en Books #4: Vampire Loves

Love isn't any easier when you're dead. Meet Ferdinand, a vampire who bites his victims with only one tooth in order to pass as a mosquito, who loves the music of dead folk singers, and who has no end of trouble trying to make sense of his relationships, some living, some not.

Vampire Loves follows the strangely romantic adventures of Ferdinand and his friends as they flirt with, seduce, cheat on, break up, and make up with all manner of unearthly creatures including ghosts, other vampires, tree-folk and the occasional golem.

Filled with the trademark Joann Sfar blend of tenderness, comedy, melancholy, and philosophy, the stories in Vampire Loves are guaranteed to make you a fan.

Hallowe'en Countdown: Top Spooky Books #5!

Hallowe'en is right around the corner -- and to help you get in the mood, over the next few days Curious Comics will be counting down the Top 5 Spooky Books to help you make this October as creepy as possible!

Top Hallowe'en Books #5: Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service!

Anyone need a corpse-dowser? No? How about a puppet that thinks its an alien? Nah, didn't think so. Five no-hopers at a Buddhist university find little call for their extremely unusual job skills in today's Tokyo... among the living, that is! Yet all those strange abilities give them a direct line to the dead -- spirits who are still trapped in this world, unable to move on until their bodies are found and given a proper burial. But it's hard to get paid when your customers are all dead!

Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is an extremely unusual book, delivering atmospheric stories of the supernatural populated by a unique cast of characters that will keep you hooked all the way through this multi-volume series. Highly recommended!

Hallowe'en Countdown: Top Spooky Games #1!

Hallowe'en is right around the corner -- and to help you get in the mood, over the next few days Curious Comics will be counting down the Top 5 Spooky Games to help you make this October as creepy as possible!

Top Hallowe'en Games #1: Zombies!!!

Admit it - you saw this one coming a mile away! Really, the #1 slot on the Curious Comics Hallowe'en Games Countdown couldn't have gone to anything else... Zombies!!! has everything you need to turn a ho-hum evening into a rapid-fire night on the edge -- full of laughs, near-misses and end-of-the-world goodness.

Zombies!!! puts you in the middle of the action as you try to escape the ever-advancing zombie horde. Players must use a combination of wits and firepower to be the first to the heliport and escape... the problem is, the heliport is hard to find, while the zombies are everywhere and your opponents would really prefer if you didn't swipe that chopper and head for the hills before they do...

Over the past few years, the kooky game designers at Twilight Creations have made the end of the world a one-stop shopping event. We've seen several optional expansions for the basic Zombies!!! game, granting players the chance to explore nasty new locations like sewers, army bases, shopping malls and (perhaps the most terrifying of all) the circus. We've also seen stand-alone variants for the game -- titles like MidEvil deliver an Army of Darkness-ish horror experience, while Humans!!! allows you to experience un-life from the zombies' (admittedly somewhat one-sided, brains-obsessed) point of view. In short, the award-winning Zombies!!! and its extended family of games offers something gruesome for everyone. What more could you want for Hallowe'en get-together?

Happy trick-or-treating!

Hallowe'en Countdown: Top Spooky Games #2!

Hallowe'en is right around the corner -- and to help you get in the mood, over the next few days Curious Comics will be counting down the Top 5 Spooky Games to help you make this October as creepy as possible!

Top Hallowe'en Games #2: Munchkin Bites!

Watch out! The Munchkins are now vampires... and werewolves... and other horrible things that go bump in the night! But, this being a Munchkin game, you will still get to bash your way through the haunted house and slay the monsters (um, the other monsters that is) and take their spooky stuff!

So grab your Coffin (+3!) and wield The Sword Of Beheading People Just Like In That Movie. Face terrifying foes like the Banshee, the Heck Hounds, and (gasp!) the dreaded Were-Muskrat! Smite them all, be the first to get to Level 10 and all of Hallowe'en will be yours to command! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Spooky Edition!

XXXHolic Episode One

When Kimihiro Watanuki -- a high school student constantly haunted by difficult spirits -- thought his life couldn't get any weirder... until the day he stumbled into a shop that specialized in granting wishes! The owner of the shop, the mysterious witch Yūko Ichihara, offers to intercede on Watanuki's behalf and grant his wish to be free of his spirit-born problems... but in exchange, he must become Yūko's part-time employee. Now Watanuki's life consists of running errands, dealing with the supernatural, and (of course) mundane household chores -- in short, doing pretty much whatever the eccentric and demanding Yūko wants. Along the way he will meet people from other worlds, see dangers he never thought existed, and face the greatest challenge of all -- specifically, how long can he hold out before his new boss drives him insane?

From best-selling manga artists CLAMP comes XXXHolic, an atmospheric detour into the strange and supernatural. Part comedy, part spook-fest, XXXHolic is born of a happy meeting of high-quality animation courtesy of Production I.G. (the folks behind the fan-favourite Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Blood+ series) and CLAMP's easy expertise at bringing fun and unique characters to life. And, thanks to the folks at Anime News Network, you can follow this link and start watching the first episode of this highly rated series even before you finish reading this blog entry. ATZ: All Things Zombie Miniatures Game!

ATZ isn't just another zombie game... ATZ is the zombie game!
The Origins Award Winner for the Best Miniatures Game of 2006, ATZ is the only miniatures combat game that promises to take you from the beginning of the first few sporadic zombie outbreaks straight through to the final apocalyptic days when zombies rule the earth. On your way, you'll find out that zombies aren't your only problem. There are also lawless bandits and looters to avoid... friends to be found and innocents to be saved... and sometimes, when the chips are down, you'll discover that your biggest enemy can be yourself.

The ATZ Core Book provides a zombie apocalypse for every occasion -- from a quick and bloody one-shot skirmish session to a huge and ever-evolving (or should that be devolving?) world filled with terrifying challenges and grim scenarios, where each encounter is linked to the next via a seamless and easy-to-use Campaign System. ATZ even offers a great rules system for solo gamers if your buddies are too freaked out to get their hands dirty! ATZ also works with ANY figures you already may have -- so you just lost your last excuse not to play!

Grab your copy of ATZ and open the door to hours of fun... just be sure to lock it up securely (maybe nail a few boards across it, and barricade it with some good heavy furniture too) once you're done!

Dead Reign RPG!

Rule Number 1: stay alive. Rule Number 2: rescue any living person you can. Rule Number 3: never pass up an opportunity for a little payback...

In Dead Reign -- the post-apocalyptic RPG from the makers of the best-selling RIFTS series of books -- player characters are both the hunted and the hunters as they battle the seemingly endless, creeping doom that the living dead have brought to the world. But these are not your average Romero zombies -- these unholy critters have commandeered the cities, keeping living humans as breeding stock in well-guarded pens, pushing the remaining survivors out into hiding in the wilderness.

Is this the end of the world as we know it? Can Earth be reclaimed by humanity? I guess that's up to you! This October, throw the players in your regular RPG group a curveball with a few one-shot sessions pulled from the Dead Reign core book. Who knows, the PCs might even survive long enough to turn the game into a campaign!

Ghost Hunt: Episode One

When Tokyo schoolgirl Mai Taniyama accidentally injures one of the paranormal investigators hired to look into strange occurrences in a disused building at her school, she has no choice to but make up for it by allowing herself to be drafted into the ranks of the Shibuya Psychic Research team. Led by enigmatic Kazuya "Naru" Shibuya, Mai must learn to work alongside a spirit medium, a shrine maiden, an exorcist, and a monk -- not to mention the professional skeptic Shibuya himself -- to uncover a dark mystery festering at her school. And when the mystery is finally solved -- what then? Once she has been given a glimpse of the supernatural truth that hides in the shadows of our world, will she ever be the same again?

What's Worse Than Zombies?

Humans!!!

Those demented folks at Twilight Creations -- the diseased minds behind the Zombies!!! series of boardgames -- have been labouring away in their hellish development dungeons, perfecting the most hilariously horrific boardgame experience imaginable. The result? Humans!!!, where players are poor disadvantaged zombies just trying to get by without getting axed, shot or blown up by vengeful human survivors... oh, and a little brain snack every now and then might not hurt either.

And now -- to help you get in the mood for Hallowe'en -- you can test-drive this deranged little distraction every Friday night in October at Curious Comics Hillside! Just swing by after six and jump in on a round of apocalyptic goofiness in our spacious and comfortable game room. Brains not required! See you there!

Saturday Morning Cartoons!

Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens Episode 01

When Jin Mikuriya decided to use a limb from a sacred tree to carve a statue of the local shrine deity for his school art project, the last thing he was expecting was a convergence of magic and fate to bring his statue to life... but this being an anime series, of course that's exactly what happened!
