Reaper Warlord 2nd Ed Sold Out!

Reaper Miniatures has announced that the Second Edition of their miniatures combat game, Warlord, has sold at at the source. Reaper broke the news on their website earlier this week, admitting that the high demand for the new core book had beaten their estimates... which is always nice when you're breathing new life into a game that's been around a few years.

Reaper has promised a fresh print run to meet continuing demand within the next few weeks -- which, conveniently, will be about when you can start crashing Warlord demos at Curious Comics Hillside. Watch this space for more info!

First Read of the Week!

Fantastic Four #570

As Marvel's First Family reels from an inventive new attack orchestrated by the Wizard, Reed Richards is led from pondering uncomfortable memories from his own childhood to moving forward with the most significant experiment of his career... but will he really be able to solve everything?

Jonathan Hickman (whose creator-owned projects The Nightly News and Red Mass for Mars have handily shown him to be one of the sharpest creators working in comics today) joins superhero genre vet Dale Eaglesham for a fresh run at the FF. This issue is a very promising start; almost immediately, Hickman launches the book in a new direction that seems to be at right-angles to the rest of the Marvel Universe, ditching the Dark Reign mega-plot and heading off into fun over-the-top sci-fi territory. Eaglesham delivers his usual high-quality visuals, tempered with a number of very welcome nods and homages to the original Kirby style.

All in all, this is one of the best versions of the FF I've read in ages; definitely one to watch over the coming months!

Ponyo!

Just in case you didn't already know, Ponyo (known as Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea to Japanese audiences) is the new film from creative genius Hayao Miyazaki. Apparently featuring the story of a young goldfish who makes new friends on dry land, Ponyo hits theatres around the English-language-speaking world today -- and that includes Victoria! Make sure you take some time out to catch this welcome addition to Studio Ghibli's library of modern classics while it's on the big screen.

ULTIMATE COMICS: SPIDER-MAN #1

In the wake of the massacre that was Ultimatum, young Spider-Man returns to the streets of New York to pick up web-slinging where he left off. But not everything is as you last saw it; people on the streets are being nice to him for one thing, and having his Aunt May in on the secret of his super-hero identity makes for a welcome new relationship between the two characters. Still, this wouldn't be a Spider-Man book if everything were rosy and happy; there's a strange new vigilante in town, and even as the Kingpin makes his improbable return we are treated to another twist that will, without doubt, make the web-slinger's life that much more complicated in the months to come.

Anyone concerned that the re-numbering of the long-running Ultimate Spider-Man series might have taken some of the shine off the property can relax; longtime writer Brian Michael Bendis delivers the back & forth dialogue you've come to expect from his books, while artist David Lafuente brings a fresh take on these veteran faces that is both new and well within in the established Ultimate Marvel Comics style. There are even a few panels (the last page in particular) that manage to echo John Romita Jr, while staying firmly within Lafuente's own distinctive style. This is a fun read with great visuals that doesn't overwhelm new readers with too much of U-Spidey's complicated backstory. Well done guys!
