The Once & Future Cap

First Read of the Week: Captain America Reborn #6

Yes, as all you readers of Invincible Iron Man, New Avengers, and Siege already know - Steve Rogers, the man they used to call Captain America, is back. And what a world is waiting for him - Norman Osborn is in charge of the team of lunatics and monsters they call the Avengers, Thor has moved to Oklahoma and Steve's formerly dead sidekick has gained acceptance as the new star-spangled shield-slinger. (Plus, nobody remembers when Spider-Man revealed his identity during the Civil War - what's up with that?) Is there any place in this new world for him? Well, Steve's old girlfriend and ex-SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter might have some ideas... but first Steve and an all-star guest cast of friends and former enemies have to get past Crossbones, Sin, Arnim Zola, an army of homicidal Super-MODOKs and a a bunch of other creeps looking to ruin a certain super-hero's first day back from the dead. Plus, a giant robot Red Skull! If this doesn't get you stoked, then check your pulse - you may be in need of serious medical attention!

What I Really Need Is An Army Of Mechanical Spiders

And, what do you know - here they are! Courtesy of the talented sculptors of assorted creepy things employed by the Wyrd Miniatures company, Curious Comics will shortly be able to offer the budding megalomaniac a selection of steam-driven multi-legged minions for use in the RPG or miniatures combat game of his or her choice. Or, hey, you could even use them in Malifaux, Wyrd Miniatures' own character driven 32mm "heroic scale" minis skirmish game... there's always that option!

Ask a staff member for more information! And remember... check your shoes before you put your feet in them!

New Game Spotlight: Thunderstone!

Currently ranking #3 on The Hotness scale at Boardgamegeek.com, Thunderstone is the newest fantasy boardgame to utilize deck building elements borrowed from card games to create a new and unique adventure experience every time you play.

For ages the vile Doom Knights have sought to gather the mythical Thunderstones to fulfill an ancient prophecy predicting their domination over the land. Now the first Thunderstone has been discovered in the Dungeons of Grimhold and the Doom Knights have sent their minions to claim the relic. The Villagers of Barrowsdale send out the call for brave souls to face the dungeon and keep the Thunderstone out of the hands of the Doom Knights...

Thunderstone comes to us from the brainboxes at the Alderac Entertainment Group, the same folks behind some of the gaming industry's all-time best-selling CCG franchises like Legend of the Five Rings and (my personal favourite, as regular readers of this blog probably already know) the Warlord CCG. Featuring beautiful art from Jason Engle, one of the top illustrators of modern fantasy gaming, Thunderstone is 2010's first must-have fantasy game!

Comic Book Movies Are Cool Again!

Look out, Iron Man 2... here comes the real comic book movie event of the year! OK, so it's in Japanese -- and you don't really see much of anything in this 30-second teaser trailer -- but any fan of the first wave of anime to hit English-speaking shores will instantly recognize the uniforms, characters and setting of Leiji Matsumoto's classic sci-fi adventure series, the Space Battleship Yamato... otherwise known to Western audiences as Starblazers!

Looks like Santa got my letter after all! Thanks, big guy.

First Reads of the Week!

Incredible Hulk #606 and Hulk #19

We're treated to a double dose of radioactive rage this week as Marvel's Fall of the Hulks event gets rolling! First, in Hulk #19, Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness sic the Intelligencia (that's M.O.D.O.K., the Leader, the Mad Thinker and all their pals) on the Fantastic Four... but when the Red Hulk shows up to save them, can he be trusted any further than Ben Grimm could throw him? (Which, granted, is pretty far - but, still.)

Next, in Incredible Hulk #606, Greg Pak and Paul Pelletier team up to send the de-powered Bruce Banner rushing to Latveria, straight into the path of Doctor Doom. Without the backup of his Gamma-irradiated alter-ego, can Banner out-think Von Doom before the good Doctor smacks him six ways from Sunday?

There's a lot going on in the Hulk books these days - more temporary alliances, hidden agendas, secret identities and unexpected transformations than you can shake a Geiger counter at. If you haven't had a Hulk book on your pull list lately, then now is the time to get on board!

First Read of the Week!

Age of Reptiles: The Journey #2

The world is changing... becoming colder, more barren, making it harder and harder for the herbivores of the ancient Mesozoic to scratch a living from the hostile soil. Driven south in search of warmer climates, they are continually harried by desperate, starving predators... animals who are getting hungry enough to attack anything, no matter what the size!

Ricardo Delgado, the talented storyboard artist behind films like Men in Black, The Incredibles, WALL-E, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the Matrix series, returns once again to his critically acclaimed Eisner Award-winning comic series with Age of Reptiles: The Journey. If you're looking to try something a little different in the new year, then look no further - this is the (non-superhero) comics event of the season!
