Goodbye, Andrew Koenig

As I'm sure you've all heard by now, police have reported that actor Andrew Koenig was found dead in Vancouver today, after being missing since Valentine's Day. Though Mr Koenig had an extremely varied resume, most will remember him from his role as Kirk Cameron's likeable sidekick in the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains. Personally, I think projects like his brief and intense portrayal of the Joker in Sandy Collora's independently-produced short film Batman: Dead End really demonstrated the man's versatility and talent as an actor. Unfortunately, we have seen that talent for the last time.

More information about the life and career of Andrew Koenig can be found here.

First Read of the Week!

Fantastic Four #576

A team of some of the world's pre-eminent scientists have discovered an ancient superstructure buried deep beneath the ice of the Antarctic's Lake Vostok... and, just to complicate things, it looks as if the terrorist group A.I.M. is closing in on the find as well. With no time to waste, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben head south to secure this discovery before A.I.M. does -- but what they find waiting for them in the depths of Lake Vostok challenges what they think they know of Earth's history. Is this really the true kingdom of Atlantis, concealed in the darkness beneath centuries' worth of ice?

Writer Jonathan Hickman continues to deliver solid SF adventure stories as he and artist Dale Eaglesham define a new era of the Fantastic Four. Do yourself a favour and check it out for yourself -- you won't be disappointed!

Manga Spotlight: Vagabond

The Battle of Sekigahara changed the political landscape of Japan forever, destroying the old order and making way for the rise of the powerful Tokugawa Shogunate. But Tokugawa Ieyasu was not the only individual who walked off this battlefield and into the history books; on the losing side, a 17 year old footsoldier managed to escape the chaos, death and disease of the battle and wander off into the forest. Penniless, unarmed and unable to return to his home village, this teenaged outcast resolved to forge his own destiny... one that would ultimately leave an indelible mark on the history of Japan.

This is Vagabond -- the incredible story of Miyamoto Musashi, the talented swordsman whose iconoclastic thinking revolutionized the staid and strictly regimented way of the samurai in Japan of the 17th century. Founder of the Niten-ryu school of swordsmanship and author of the famous Book of Five Rings, his strategic thinking is still studied and applied all around the world. Adapted and illustrated by the acclaimed artist Takehiko Inoue (author of the fan-favourite sports manga Slam Dunk), Vagabond is a visceral journey through a brutal and unforgiving world that is sure to appeal to western fans of Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, Lord of the Rings, and more. Highly recommended!

First Read of the Week!

Doomwar #1

For the first time in its long history, Wakanda has been conquered. King T'Challa and his sister Shuri, the current Black Panther, have been forced to flee the country, while Queen Ororo -- also known as the X-Man Storm -- has been captured and faces execution in the next 48 hours.

And the man behind it all? None other than Victor Von Doom. It has long been a goal of the powerful monarch of Latveria to acquire Wakanda's considerable reserves of Vibranium, the only such reserves in the world. Now Doom stands on the verge of triumph -- but it's not over yet. The X-Men have combined forces with the Fantastic Four, King T'Challa and the Black Panther, and they will not allow Doom's many transgressions to pass. A war is about to begin that will pit the world's most relentless villain against an army of the world's most powerful heroes...

I hadn't read much of anything by newbie Marvel Comics writer Johnathan Mayberry before picking up Doomwar, so I didn't really know what to expect -- but I am very impressed. Mayberry uses this issue as a bridge between his short run on Black Panther and the main story of Doomwar, and manages to bring casual readers up to speed while not getting too bogged down with infodump. Artist Scot Eaton hits a home run here -- it's been great to see this guy perfect his style over the last few years, and these days his books are always worth a look. Highly recommended!

Watchmen Heroclix Announced!

Who watches the Watchmen? Well, since you're reading a comic book blog, it's probably safe to assume that you do - and since the new Watchmen Heroclix are only going to be an inch or so high, keeping an eye on these guys is going to be a cinch. You read that right - Neca and the new Wizkids have announced the upcoming release of the Watchmen Heroclix Collector's Series Boxed Set. Bigger than any other box set ever released for Heroclix, the Watchmen set will feature an impressive array of 25 figures based on characters featured in the film version of Alan Moore's bestselling dystopian superhero epic. Also announced was the simultaneous release of the Doctor Manhattan Colossal Figure - and, measuring in at 14" tall, this in-scale version of the big blue guy will definitely dominate your gaming table.

Batman vs Rorschach? Galactus vs Doctor Manhattan? Wonder Woman vs Silk Spectre? It's all up to you... just make sure you keep an eye on that Ozymandias dude. The only bad news is that we're all going to have to wait until the summer to get our hands on the set - but, while you're waiting for the Watchmen set to hit the shelves, make sure to drop by Curious Comics Hillside on Saturdays @ 12 noon for a game or two of Heroclix and brush up on your superhero battling skills. See you there!

New Series Spotlight: Queen Sonja

Queen Sonja #4

Since her relaunch under the Dynamite banner just a few years ago, the monthly Red Sonja title has reliably delivered some of the best sword & sorcery adventure stories in the modern comics market. With sizable runs by creators like Michael Avon Oeming and Brian Reed, Red Sonja stormed her way through nearly fifty issues before Dynamite elected to wrap the top-selling series and re-launch it as Queen Sonja, a fresh ongoing monthly with a new #1... the perfect jumping-on point for new readers!

Luring Mel Rubi back to provide the visuals for the continuing adventures of the 'She-Devil With A Sword' can't have been an easy job, but Dynamite definitely earns extra points for managing it. Other Red Sonja regular artists like Fabiano Neves, Lui Antonio and Walter Geovani never disappoint, but it's Rubi that helped usher in a new age for Sonja by blowing the audience away when she returned to comic shelves back in 2005 - and it's great to see him back.

With writer Joshua Ortega turning Sonja's world upside down and Rubi knocking it out of the park on each and every page, Queen Sonja has been a very welcome alternative to the endless 'Mexican Wrestling'-style of storytelling that seems to dominate most of the books across the Big Two. Highly recommended!

Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #7

The Watchers - extraterrestrial machines sent to Earth to help mankind survive an approaching apocalypse - have chosen their herald... and for some strange reason known only to themselves, they've selected some kid living just a few blocks away from May Parker and her nephew Peter - some kid nobody's ever heard of called Rick Jones.

Takeshi Miyazawa (Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane) joins longtime Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis for the beginning of a new story arc for Marvel's retooled Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man line. Giving the Mysterio storyline a bit of a rest after the last story arc, Bendis brings us a great change-of-pace issue dealing with the sudden manifestation of Rick Jones' otherwordly powers, and what happens when Peter Parker, Johnny Storm and Bobby Drake are sent by Aunt May to help Rick adjust to his new life. As much as I've been enjoying regular artist David LaFuente's version of Ultimate Spider-Man, it's great to see Takeshi Miyazawa hit yet another home run with these characters. Great stuff!

New Series Spotlight: Ultimate Comics X

Ultimate Comics X #1

In the wake of the Ultimatum series, Marvel's Ultimate Universe is in disarray. Most of the X-Men - including Wolverine - are dead. Captain America is a fugitive. The Fantastic Four have disbanded. So who - or what - is Ultimate X?

The bigshots at Marvel have been taking some gutsy chances with their Ultimate titles over the last year, and Ultimate X is the latest application of the new formula -- surprise the reader, turn things on their head, take some chances. With that kind of mission statement, it's a safe bet that wherever the all-star creative team of Jeph Loeb (Batman, Hulk) and Art Adams (X-Men) decide to take this ongoing bi-monthly series, the ride will be one worth taking. Highly recommended!

G.I. Joe: Origins #12

Sure, you knew the Baroness was cool... but I'll bet you didn't know she was this cool! Lucky for us, writer Marc Andreyko (DC's Manhunter) and fan-favourite artist Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night, Wormwood) know all of the Baroness' secrets, and are willing to let us in on a few of them. Her feud with her parents; her rebellious student years; her first introduction to international terrorism; the day she was recruited by Cobra -- look for it all within the pages of this one-shot, self-contained Origins issue.

If you read just one G.I. Joe comic this year... you'd better make it this one!
