First Read of the Week!

Doomwar #1

For the first time in its long history, Wakanda has been conquered. King T'Challa and his sister Shuri, the current Black Panther, have been forced to flee the country, while Queen Ororo -- also known as the X-Man Storm -- has been captured and faces execution in the next 48 hours.

And the man behind it all? None other than Victor Von Doom. It has long been a goal of the powerful monarch of Latveria to acquire Wakanda's considerable reserves of Vibranium, the only such reserves in the world. Now Doom stands on the verge of triumph -- but it's not over yet. The X-Men have combined forces with the Fantastic Four, King T'Challa and the Black Panther, and they will not allow Doom's many transgressions to pass. A war is about to begin that will pit the world's most relentless villain against an army of the world's most powerful heroes...

I hadn't read much of anything by newbie Marvel Comics writer Johnathan Mayberry before picking up Doomwar, so I didn't really know what to expect -- but I am very impressed. Mayberry uses this issue as a bridge between his short run on Black Panther and the main story of Doomwar, and manages to bring casual readers up to speed while not getting too bogged down with infodump. Artist Scot Eaton hits a home run here -- it's been great to see this guy perfect his style over the last few years, and these days his books are always worth a look. Highly recommended!
