First Read of the Week!

Amazing Spider-Man #626

Spider-Man has been through the wringer lately -- seems like every single one of his old villains has been coming out of the woodwork to ruin his day! Electro, Vulture, Rhino... and now the Scorpion! You don't think it has anything to do with the Gauntlet story arc, do you?

Spidey tails a suspicious-looking creep to a secret midnight meet organized by the Hood, where the criminal mastermind has invited New York's nastiest to participate in a no-holds-barred cage match -- with the super-powered suit of the original Scorpion as the prize! But add another Scorpion to the mix, and things are about to get complicated for our favourite wallcrawler!

Any time atmospheric artist Michael Gaydos gets a headline assignment like Amazing Spider-Man, it's worth a look. His gritty style is perfect for characters like Spidey and Daredevil, even though it seems he rarely gets a shot at them. Gaydos also tackles the colouring duties this week, and it almost looks as if he's borrowed the palette from Ralph Bakshi's original Spider-Man cartoon, letting loose with wild reds and splashes of orange that dominate the pencils and set the mood. Filling the word balloons, Fred Van Lente delivers a rapid-fire script that keeps Spidey cracking wise and the larger Gauntlet arc moving. Good radioactive-spider-powered fun!
